Health Alert Issued by Experts Following Plane Crash Near Milestone College, Uttara
By: Shoyb Hossain
Following a recent and devastating plane crash in the vicinity of Milestone College, Uttara, significant concerns have emerged regarding the physical and mental health of students, teachers, and local residents. Experts have warned that the intense noise, fire, smoke, and presence of toxic debris may pose long-term health hazards.
Many students who witnessed the incident remain traumatized and are reluctant to return to school. Teachers report noticeable changes in students’ behavior and focus.
According to environmental and public health experts, the smoke released from jet fuel, along with the burning of plastic, paint, rubber, asbestos, lead, and various toxic chemicals, could severely pollute the air in and around the school campus. Prolonged exposure to these elements may lead to respiratory illnesses, skin diseases, neurological disorders, and even cancer.
Substances such as Benzene and Dioxin, released from jet fuel combustion, are internationally recognized as carcinogenic. Toxic gases released from burnt paint and plastics pose a serious risk, especially to children.
Mental health professionals warn that such a traumatic incident can leave long-lasting effects on young minds, including fear, nightmares, insomnia, loneliness, loss of focus, and behavioral disorders.
In light of this situation, experts strongly recommend that the school environment and surrounding areas be immediately tested for contamination. The Department of Environment and the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) should jointly conduct air, water, and soil assessments. Additionally, it is essential to monitor the health of teachers, students, and staff for a period of 6 to 12 months through regular medical check-ups.
To address psychological trauma, group counseling sessions, fear-reduction therapies, and interventions such as music, sound, or frequency therapy may prove beneficial.
Government and non-government organizations—such as the DGHS, Ministry of Education, Department of Environment, BRAC Health, Red Crescent, UNICEF, Plan International, Dutch-Bangla Bank, and ACI Foundation—should come forward with support and initiatives.
Parents are urged to closely observe their children’s health and behavior, and to seek medical attention promptly if any symptoms arise.
Experts caution that the impact of this disaster should not be allowed to hinder the physical and mental development of an entire generation. Coordinated, timely action is essential to prevent long-term damage.
